Bank Islam to Offer Enhanced ID-Theft Protection for its Internet Banking Facility

Kuala Lumpur, 20 December 2006 - Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam) announced today it has further enhanced its Internet Banking service, “” with the addition of an identity theft protection feature called  i-Access Code (IAC).

The IAC functions as a second authentication, in addition to the password currently used, to identify the bank’s customer. This significantly strengthens the security and enhances protection against identify theft.

Dato’ Zukri Samat, Bank Islam’s Managing Director, said: “Internet banking customers are conducting more than 160,000 transactions per month. It is therefore important that we constantly review our existing security environment to best protect our growing online business.”

“By incorporating the IAC, it will make online customers more confident and secure whenever they access the bank’s website,” he added, in a statement issued today.

The Bank’s efforts to provide a highly secure platform for its Internet Banking customers is reflected in Bank Islam being accorded SIRIM’s QAS certification for its Information Security Management System (ISMS, the first bank in the country achieve this accreditation.

In addition, Bank Islam has also been awarded the Platinum Award under the MasterCard Asia/Pacific Marketing Leadership Awards 2006, in the category of best e-commerce related initiative in the year 2005 and 2006 respectively.

The IAC is easy to use and does not require customers to have any special hardware or software. However, prior to performing any monetary transactions, they would have to request for an IAC either via or Bank Islam’s ATMs.

Customers will continue to access their accounts at using their current login ID and password. They are then required to key-in the IAC.

Bank Islam’s internet banking service launched on 31 March 2003 has 33,000 registered users as at October 2006. The services enabled through the internet include fund transfers, balance inquiry and bills payment.

As at October 2006, a total of 69 service providers, such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Telekom Malaysia, Syabas, Astro and local councils have signed up with Bank Islam to facilitate payment via
