Customers can now pay zakat (tithes) online, via Financial Process Exchange (FPX) facility which was launched between the Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam) and Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS), today.
Through the partnership with MAIS, the bank will provide FPX facility, an internet payment method that allows the switching and routing of payment transaction requests between the bank and MAIS.
”Bank Islam now provides the convenience of zakat payment from the comfort of homes or anywhere in the world. This online payment service is in line with Bank Islam’s objective to continuously provide more value added services to our customers,” said Dato’ Noorazman A.Aziz, Managing Director of Bank Islam.
He said, we also hope that this new online service will encourage more Muslims to fulfill their obligations and create greater awareness on the importance of zakat to help the poor and needy.
The payment of zakat is obligatory on all Muslims. It refers to committing a fixed portion of one’s wealth for the poor and needy in the society.
In Malaysia, zakat collection has increased seven-fold from RM61 million in 1991 to RM473 million in 2004. The bulk of collection was made from Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan.
“This online payment service is the start of several other online services Bank Islam will be rolling out. It will play a major role in targeting more customers from two main banking activities, namely consumer and retail banking,” he added.
Bank Islam was the country’s first bank to receive SIRIM QAS International’s BS7799:2-2002 certification for its information security management system.
Dato’ Noorazman added that as at May 2006, Bank Islam has 26,200 subscribers for its internet banking facility — bankislam.biz and 83,400 users for its mobile banking facility — bankislam.sms.
Bank Islam is one of the first banks to participate in the FPX pilot project which was developed by Malaysian Electronic Payment System (MEPS) in 2004.
