Bank Islam Clinches Mastercard Award

KUALA LUMPUR, September 4: Malaysia’s most established Islamic financial institution, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam), was presented an award by MasterCard Worldwide for the launch of the MasterCard Online Authentication System (MOAS) and the MasterCard Internet Gateway Services (MIGS).

The bank clinched a Platinum Award under the MasterCard Asia/Pacific Marketing Leadership Awards 2006, in the category of best e-commerce related initiative.

The MasterCard Online Authentication System (MOAS) and the MasterCard Internet Gateway Services (MIGS) offer a broad spectrum of online security solutions with protection for both, card holders and merchants, deterring unauthorized online card usage and provide chargeback protection for participating merchants.

“It is a great honour for Bank Islam to be recognized by MasterCard in this award. It will serve as an impetus for the bank to set higher targets and excellent benchmarks,” said Bank Islam’s Managing Director, Dato’ Zukri Samat, at the award presentation ceremony here today.

The award was presented by Mr. Jim Cheah, Vice President and Senior Country Manager, Malaysia and Brunei, MasterCard Worldwide.

Looking forward, Dato’ Zukri said that Bank Islam will strive for greater excellence and introduce superior, more customer friendly programmes which will explore various different market segments. Together with enhanced market activities, these will give Bank Islam an edge over many other banks.

Dato’ Zukri added, the award and recognition received were timely as the bank is aggressively promoting its products and services to the public particularly our credit cards, while having the foresight to be the first in South East Asia to offer secure online transactions to its card holders and to offer peace of mind to its online merchants.

“For 40 years, MasterCard has pioneered security innovations and we continue to be committed to ensuring that merchants can safely and securely accept and process their customers’ cards and uphold their brands and reputations,” said Jim Cheah, vice president and senior country manager, Malaysia and Brunei, MasterCard Worldwide.

“SecureCode was designed by MasterCard to provide industry players a ready made infrastructure that will offer secure online transactions. With this, we would like to congratulate Bank Islam on winning this prestigious award for their vision and foresight in launching South-East Asia’s first MasterCard® SecureCode™ solution to address e-commerce security.”

For more than 10 years, the MasterCard Asia/Pacific Marketing Leadership Awards, have recognized excellence of its customer financial institutions in launching and marketing innovative card programmes in their respective markets. The award winners are also selected based on how successful the card program was when compared to the other markets within Asia/Pacific.

The MasterCard Asia/Pacific Marketing Leadership Awards cover 13 markets, namely: Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Macau, plus the Southeast Asian countries Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

In each category, customer financial institutions vie to win the Platinum award (the most coveted placement) followed by gold and silver.
