Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam), Malaysia’s first established Islamic bank, today announces the appointment of Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah bin Mohd Tahir as Chairman of Bank Islam effective 1 August 2006.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah, 59, for many years has held various positions in the government sector particularly in the legislating and implementing of public policies and in the research and development (R&D) sector. He has also the opportunity to serve as a member of the Board of Directors in government-linked companies (GLCs) especially in finance, investment banking and industrial sector.
At present, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah holds the Chairmanship in two agencies under the umbrella of the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, that is the Malaysian Rubber Board (Lembaga Getah Malaysia) and the Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council (Majlis Promosi Perabut Malaysia). Apart from that, he is also a Board Member for TSH Resources Berhad and Ekowood International Berhad.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah has retired from government service on 10 February 2005 after 34 years of exemplary service. His last position was the Chief Secretary in the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities which he held since 31 December 2000. Among his major achievements were the preparation and research of documents and reports for the 5th and 6th Malaysian Plan and also “Rangka Rancangan Jangka Panjang”, while serving as the Commerce and Industrial Director of Economic Planning Unit from 1986 until 1991. He had also assumed the role of research team leader for the Second Industrial Master Plan while serving as the Deputy Chief Secretary at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry from 1991 until1997.
Bank Islam’s Managing Director, Dato’ Zukri Samat said, “Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah’s vast experience would definitely contribute towards the betterment and growth of Bank Islam and we look forward to working with him”.
Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Abdullah holds a PhD. in Economics from American University, United States of American and Masters Degree in Finance from Catholic University, Belgium. He replaces Bank Islam’s previous Chairman, Dato’ Mohd Yusoff Haji Nasir who retired on 1 December 2004.
