Bank Islam Opens in Sandakan, Sabah


Extending its wide variety of innovative Islamic products and services to meet the needs of all Malaysians

SANDAKAN, Sabah, Sunday [22 February, 2009]: Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam) in line with its commitment to meet the ever growing needs of Islamic banking products and services, has opened a branch in this fast growing town, that will play a key role in the development of Sabah. Representing the Sabah Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister cum Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Yahya Hussin officially opened the branch today.

Speaking at the ceremony, Bank Islam’s Managing Director Dato’ Zukri Samat said: “The presence of Bank Islam in Sandakan is timely for businesses in Sabah as a whole. In line with the government's plan to make Sabah a center for regional development under the 9th Malaysia Plan, we plan to play an active role in assisting the businesses and industries to tap both equity and debt markets, domestic and international," he added.
With the addition of Sandakan to the bank’s network, Bank Islam now has 93 branches serving two million customers nationwide. Dato’ Zukri said that it is part of the bank’s expansion plan to increase its presence in major towns in Malaysia.

Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Yahya mentioned that the setting up of a branch in Sandakan was most timely and would allow Bank Islam to take advantage of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) robust economic activities.

“Bank Islam should consider opening more branches in Sabah, where they can take advantage of the SDC development. I believe the Bank can play a significant role in helping businesses grow,” he added.

The launch of the Sandakan branch is a concrete step towards further strengthening Bank Islam’s relationship with the local community.

Dato’ Zukri said that feedback from customers, both within the immediate vicinity of the branch as well as from the surrounding areas show there is a need for a full fledged Islamic Bank in the locality. Responding to these input, Bank Islam decided to set up a branch here, In line with our brand value of putting our customers at the centre of what we do.

"In addition, by helping to provide the market with the much needed Shariah-based products and services, we see ourselves playing a role to help achieve the objectives of the Malaysian government to promote Malaysia as a center for Islamic finance.”

Bank Islam Sandakan branch will cater to both individuals and entrepreneurs and is fully equipped to provide a complete range of Shariah-based products and services, such as Home financing, Personal financing, Bank Islam credit card and Wealth Management service. Additionally, the branch is equipped with self-service terminals to facilitate banking transactions.

Also present at the opening ceremony are Encik Khairul Kamarudin, General Manager of Consumer Banking and Encik Mokhlis Maizan, General Manager of Corporate Banking.

The branch is headed by Encik Amnar Lubrah, an experienced banker who hails from Sandakan, assisted by 14 highly dedicated staff. The branch is located at Lot 1 & 2, Block 23, Bandar Indah, Mile 4, North Road, Sandakan. The business hours are from 9.30a.m. to 4.30p.m. from Mondays to Fridays. The branch is closed on public holidays.
