Bank Islam Expands Its E-Zakat Payment Services

Kuala Terengganu, September 17: Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (Bank Islam), Malaysia’s first established Islamic bank, recorded another milestone when it expands its payment of zakat (tithes) via online services to Terengganu.

In its latest venture, Bank Islam will be collaborating with Majlis Agama Islam Dan Adat Melayu Terengganu (MAIDAM), the state’s zakat collection centre, to provide this service to the state.

According to Bank Islam’s Managing Director, Dato’ Zukri Samat, this new mode of zakat payment reflects one of Bank Islam’s on-going initiatives to provide convenience for its growing number of card holders.

”Bank Islam now provides the convenience of zakat payment from the comfort of homes or anywhere in the world. This online payment service is in line with Bank Islam's objective to continuously provide more value added services to our customers,” he said in his speech, which was delivered by General Manager, Bank Islam, Dato’ Wan Ismail Wan Yusoh.

A signing ceremony was held today between the two parties to seal the partnership, witnessed by Menteri Besar Terengganu, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Haji Idris Jusoh.  Bank Islam was represented by Y.Bhg. Dato’ Wan Ismail Wan Yusoh while MAIDAM was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Y.Bhg. Dato’ Haji Alwi bin Muhamad.

Through this partnership with MAIDAM, Dato’ Zukri added, Bank Islam will offer zakat payment via three of its electronic banking facilities namely, internet banking bankislam.biz, SMS banking bankislam.SMS and Financial Process Exchange (FPX).

Bank Islam will also install card acceptance terminals at selected MAIDAM’s counters in order to facilitate customers to pay their zakat via e-debit or MEPS Cash. Besides these electronic banking facilities, customers can still pay their zakat at any Bank Islam counter and automatic teller machine (ATM).

He said, “We also hope that this new online service will encourage more Muslims to fulfill their obligations and create greater awareness on the importance of zakat to help the poor and needy.”

Recently, the Bank has also collaborated with Majlis Agama Islam in all states in offering the e-zakat payment.

FPX is an alternative payment channel for customers to make payment at e-market places such as websites and online stores as well as for corporations to collect payment from their customers. To utilize this facility, customers will have to access MAIDAM’s website for the zakat payment process.

The e-Debit (electronic hands transfer at point of sale) is a service where the public pay their purchases using Bankcard and Personal Identification Number (PIN). The purchase amount will be deducted directly from either their Savings or Current Account.

MEPS Cash is an e-Purse application in customers’ Bankcard, which stores a specific amount of monetary value loaded from ATM account, which can be used to make small purchases. MEPS Cash is a convenient method for making your routine daily purchases.

The payment of zakat is obligatory to all Muslims. It refers to committing a fixed portion of one's wealth for the poor and needy people in the society.

For record as at August 2006, Bank Islam has 30,515 subscribers for its internet banking facility - bankislam.biz and 108,910 users for its mobile banking facility - bankislam.SMS.
